Moon Boot/CAM Walker fitting

CAM Walker, commonly called Moon Boot are generally prescribed for many common lower limb injuries, such as Achilles tendon ruptures, foot/ankle fractures or post-surgery. Perfect Motion Physiotherapy carries a variety of moon boots in various sizes to accommodate your specific orthopaedic or musculoskeletal condition. We can provide and fit you with a comfortable boot to help offload your injury and get back on your feet as quickly as possible.

We work closely with some of the top Emergency Medicine physicians at two of the leading emergency departments in Adelaide. We generally stock all sizes of moonboots and can provide/fit a boot for your leg injury. We do understand that getting a brace fitted is an emergency and will try our best to fit you in on an urgent basis.

Please email us at admin@perfectmotionphysiotherapy outside of clinic hours and we will try our best to get back to you quickly.

What is a CAM Walker?

CAM Walker – Controlled Ankle Movement, the primary role of which is to minimise ankle and foot movement, by offloading pressure from the ankle/foot and redistributing it up the leg. By minimising the pressure off the injured parts of the leg, you are able to place your weight through the affected limb without feeling pain. This helps further, by allowing your injury to heal properly, without any added pressure and strain.

CAM walkers are a more durable, hygienic, and functional alternative to the traditional plaster casts. They are specially designed to help you walk as normally as possible, with a ‘rocker-bottom’ sole. This assists you in maintaining a normal ‘heel to toe’ gait pattern. This ergonomic design also means that it is highly likely that you do not require crutches, unless you have other conditions that may put you at risk of falls.

Why do you need a CAM Walker?

Moon boots are usually recommended for two main reasons:

Taking pressure off an acute injury and when your leg/foot pain is chronic.

Offloading pressure can be required to assist in the healing of certain foot and leg injuries, especially when they can render walking too painful, such as:

  • Broken and fractured foot or leg bones, including toes
  • Ankle injuries and strains
  • Achilles’ tendon ruptures
  • Muscle and tendon tears
  • Non-displaced fractures, like stress fractures
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Post-surgery stabilisation and weight

It is vital to note that, according to the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), Department of Health, Australia, it is not best practice to hire a moon boot. Each moon boot needs to be selected and carefully fitted for the individual. We do not offer any refunds for any incorrect choices, incorrect sizing or change of mind, which is why we strongly recommend attending in person to the clinic. Once a CAM Walker is purchased, it cannot be returned for any reason due to hygiene and health reasons.
